We could say that you don’t want to hear what goes into most commercial toothpastes, but actually you DO! We all want a great smile, healthy teeth and gums, but do we really want to risk our health by using toothpastes containing the following ingredients? Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) makes the toothpaste foam and has been asociated with all sorts of health risks. Among other negative health effects, studies show it increases the likelihood of developing cold sores, canker sores and mouth ulcers.
Triclosan, an antibacterial agent, has been recently banned by the FDA (but still in commercial South African toothpastes) due to the fact that it “could pose health risks, such as bacterial resistance or hormonal effects”.
Flouride was once hailed as the cure-all for tooth decay. While flouride occurs naturally, studies now suggest that it can upset the iodine balance in the body and affect thyroid functioning, causing weight gain, fatigue, poor concentration and other problems.
Glycerin is found in most toothpastes and many personal care products and is petroleum based.
Hydrogen Peroxide is a bleaching agent and disinfectant. While it whitens teeth, it also oxidizes tooth enamel and can irritate the gums and de-mineralise the teeth, leading to dental sensitivity and weakening the tooth.
Artificial Dyes in most mouthwashes can stain your teeth over time. In addition, many dies used in mouth washes have been shown to be cytotoxic (toxic to living cells).
Artificial Preservatives like methyl paraben, sodium benzoate and ethyl paraben (in fact you would be wise to avoid anything that ends in ‘paraben!) are included to extend shelf life. They have also been found to be cytotoxic and carcinogenic.
No wonder they tell us not to swallow the toothpaste! And to think that these ingredients appear even in children’s toothpastes!
Luckily Feel Good System has done the work for you and selected a range of toothpastes and mouth washes that contain ONLY safe and natural ingredients, while at the same time doing a good job and tasting great!
